SEL Stands for Social Emotional Learning

The Collaborative for Academic Social Emotional Learning (CASEL) defines Social Emotional Learning (SEL) as “the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions, achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.”

Relationships and Equity are core components of CASEL’s framework with the goal of facilitating “co-learning to critically examine root causes of inequity, and to develop solutions that lead to personal, community, and societal well-being.”

Lead & Learn from the Heart applies evidence-based SEL methods for students in City Heights at Rosa Parks Elementary, Monroe Clark Middle School and Wilson Middle School utilizing the experience and expertise of our school social workers and curriculum from the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation. Our goal is to foster a safe environment of belonging and acceptance for students so they can build relationship and decision-making skills and apply them to their own lived experiences and their broader City Heights Community.
